No whey! Foods Holiday Sampler Pack review

I truly miss and feel nostalgic over those candies of my youth, especially when holidays like Halloween, Christmas, Hanukkah, and Easter roll around. Now that I’m thinking about it, are there any holidays without a nostalgic treat?

Like many parents, part of me wants to shield my kids from the unfairness of life. And I also want my kids to experience a very commonly shared childhood joy—candy. It’s something we bond over. And come on, chocolate. It speaks for itself.

I don’t know how I went so long without finding allergy friendly candies, but by far the largest impediments were taste, texture, and healthfulness. *GASP* Yes, I want my milk-free chocolate to taste like milk chocolate and not have one hundred random ingredients.

The beauty of No Whey! Foods is that they are made with food sensitivities in mind. As of the date of this review, the products are top 8 free, vegan, gluten free, and pareve kosher.

When I saw that they had a holiday sampler last December I took the plunge and ordered the box for my kids, not for me whatsoever… Here is what the box contained with the popular name brands in parenthesis: Choco-nonos (M&Ms), a milk-less chocolate bar (Hershey’s Milk Chocolate bar), Pea Not Cups (Reese’s), and their Caramel/Nougat/Chocolate bar (Milky Way).

My then 3-year old opened the box and knew what it was immediately. When he opened his little box of treasures, he screamed, “CANDY!” And we set forth on a taste test along with my toddler. Oh, yeah!

Here are our findings.

Pea Not Cups (imitation Reeses): These had a cool, more hand-made appearance to them with a thicker chocolate coating than traditional Reese’s. My toddler liked these, and I loved them. I preferred them to traditional Reese’s. I found these to taste more like Reese’s than some of the more popular sun-butter cup brands on the market like Sun2B and Trader Joe’s, though those are also pretty yummy.

Milkless Chocolate Bar (imitation Hershey’s milk chocolate bar): These were yummy and were a hit with my kids. They didn’t taste like cheap milk chocolate. If you have ever had cheap, chalky or waxy chocolate you will know exactly what I mean. It was a good standard milk chocolate bar.

No Whey! Caramel/Nougat Bar with Chocolate (imitation Milky Way): My husband liked these. I grew up on the original as a household favorite. I can’t believe how close it came to the original! It definitely is a bit different, but not in a bad way. If you are looking for something similar, this is the only bar I have found that even attempts to replicate a Milky Way.

Choco Nono’s (imitation M&Ms): We had to ration these. They were mind-blowingly delicious. These turned my chocolate hater 3 year old into a chocolate lover. In my opinion they taste better and have a better mouth-feel than M&Ms. I don’t know how they make these but holy cow, they’re doing something right. And they have no artificial dyes, which makes me a happy mama.

This was a worthwhile purchase. I hope to try the white chocolate, pepperment no-nos, “cream eggs,” and their truffles soon. I like that they offer a lot of standard products that are not so standard among allergy-friendly brands like advent calendars, holiday shaped chocolates like bunnies and santas, lollipops, “cream” eggs, surprise eggs, dreidels, and chocolate coins.

If you keep an eye out they have discounts every now and then.
